Abstract

It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 16 Kupang able to use modal auxiliaries ? (2) What is the level of their ability? The objectives of this study are the following: (1) To find out whether the students of SMP Negeri 16 Kupang in the academic year 2018/2019 are able to use modal auxiliaries in sentences or not (2) To find out students levels of ability in using Modal Auxiliaries in sentences. The research method used in this study was normartive survey method. There were nine classes : class 8A-8I. Each class consisted of 30 students, the writer chose language class as the subject of the study. In collecting the data the writer used a test in form of multiple choice consisting of 40 items. The result of the data analysis showed that students of the researched school are able to use Modal auxiliaries, and their level of ability is classified as fairly good (7.12%) based on the grade. The study also shows that many students are still confused in using several modals such as may, shall, Ought to, would, and might. There are thirteen students (52%) passed the whole test while ten students (48%) failed.The suggestion given to the English teachers and the students at the researched school. The suggestion given to the atudents are as follows: (1) the students are suggested to learn and keep improving their knowlegde and grammar in general and using the Modal Auxiliaries in particular. (2) the students are expected not only to know the modals but also the rules and how to use them in certain context. And also the suggestion given to the English teachers should emphasize their teaching on the following modals: shall, Ought to, Would and Might as the data shown that many students committed these errors on the said modals
