Abstract

The problems of this study are: 1. Does the use of Role Play Technique improve speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? 2. How is Role Play technique used to improve speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018? Therefore, the objectives of the research are: (1) to find out whether the use of Role Play technique improves speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. (2) To find out how role play technique is used to improve the speaking skill of the tenth grade students of SMKN 2 Kupang in the school year 2017/2018. It expected that role play can improve the students’ speaking English skill. Based on the observation, there were some problems in the teaching and learning of speaking. To solve those problems, the researcher implemented role play as a speaking activity. The study was classroom action research. It was conducted in two cycles. The subjects of this research were 26 students of class X TKP 4 at SMKN 2 Kupang. The data obtained were qualitative and quantitative. The qualitative data were gained from the observations and the interviews with the English teacher. The data were transformed into interview transcripts. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were gained from the speaking tests that were administered before the action implementation and at the end of every cycle. Based on the data analysis, the result of this study shows that: (1) Role play technique improves students speaking skill. It could be seen by comparing in the every cycle. The average scores of post test in cycle 1 was 2,5 or Elementary. (2) Role play technique was implemented in cycle 2 and the average scores of post test in the cycle 2 was 4,5 or Advance. It means that there was significant difference in grade speaking of speaking test achieved by the students after they have been taught using role play.
