Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang able to comprehend descriptive texts?, (2) What is the comprehension ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang in comprehending reading descriptive texts?, (3) What are the difficulties encountered by the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang in comprehending reading descriptive texts? The study is done for the following objectives: (1) To find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang are able understand descriptive text they have read, (2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang in reading descriptive texts, (3) To find the difficulties faced by the the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang in reading descriptive texts. To answer the questions mentioned above, the writer used normative survey method.The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang. They were 15 students and the writer took all of them as subject of this study. In collecting data the writer used “Test” as instrument. It consisted of 4 reading texts entitled (1) Peter’s followed by 10 questions, (2) The Hobbit followed by 10 questions, (3) My Pet followed by 5 questions, (4) Paris followed by 5 questions. The results of the study show that the eighth grade students of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 were able to comprehend reading text. Their level of comprehension ability is “Fairly Good” (69.27 %). It is based on their average grade as in the test. Even though their level of ability is fairly good, there are still some difficulties faced by the students. They answered the questions incorrectly. Therefore, the writer suggests the English teacher of SMPK Muder Teresa Kupang to give more practices to the students in reading English text. Particularly practice on finding the main idea of the text and also the teacher should help them to master grammar and vocabulary to help them to comprehend reading text.
