Abstract

This research is entitled "English Speaking Ability of Junior High School Students in Fatuleu Academic Year 2021/2022". The purpose of this study was (1) to find out how the English speaking ability of SMPN 4 Fatuleu students (2) to find out the difficulties faced by students of SMPN 4 Fatuleu Class VIIIA in speaking English. This research is quantitative descriptive. The participants in this study were students of SMPN 4 Fatuleu for the academic year 2021/2022. The sample of this research is 23 students who are in class VIIIA. The data was collected through a speaking test by describing the character of the cartoon character. In the speaking test, students were given 29 cartoon characters to choose from and asked to share what they liked about these characters and how they lived for 15 minutes making the characters' handwriting and then coming forward and presenting the results to be recorded using a mobile device.In addition, in this study there were 3 aspects assessed, namely pronunciation,grammar, and vocabulary. The data in this study are transcripts of short speeches and presentations for students to speak . From this research, it is known that the students' speaking ability is good enough at level. The factors that influence students' speaking competence are fear of making mistakes in speaking English,nervousness and lack of focus.
