Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMP NEGERI 8 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2012/2010”. The study was done in order to answer the following problems: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang able to comprehend text they read? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in comprehending the text they read? (3) What are the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in comprehending the text they read. The objectives of the study are: (1) To find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang is able to comprehend the reading text (2) To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in comprehending the text reading text (3) To find out difficulties that migth be encountered by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in comprehending the text they read. The method used in this study was normative survey method. The total respondents were 20 students. The instrument used in gathering data was a test. The text consisted of 40 items of multiple choice tests.The result of analysis indicates (1) that the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang are able to understand the text they read. (2) The ability level of students is 6.86 it is classified as fairly good, and their ability level are as follows: one (3%) student got very good level of ability ranging from 8.6 – 9.5, Three students (9%) got good level ability ranging from 7.6 – 8.5, eight (23%) students got fairly good level of ability ranging from 6.6 – 7.5, six (17%) students got average level of ability ranging from 5.6 – 6.5, two (6%) students got below average level of ability ranging from 4.6 – 5.5. (3)The difficulties faced by students in comprehending the reading text are the limitation of vocabulary. Although as a class the students are able to understand the text they read, there is the suggestion for the teacher of English, is that the English teacher should check the students mastery of vocabulary used in the reading text, and find the meaning of the words based on the text they read. While for the students, they have to read more texts to increase their vocabulary knowledge
