Abstract

This thesis is entitled A Comparative Study on the Back Translated English Text to the Original English Text of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMAN 7 Kupang in the School Year of 2015/2016. It was conducted to answer the following questions : (1) Are there any differences between the original English text and the Back translated text made by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in the school year of 2015/2016? (2) What language elements that distort the meaning of the original text?. The objective of the study are : (1) To know whether there are any differences between the original English text and the Back translated text made by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in the school year of 2015/2016,(2)To find out the language alements that distort the meaning of the original text. To do this study writer used the descriptive method. The subject of this study were the eleventh grade students of SMAN 7 Kupang in the School year of 2015/2016 especially the students class XI IPA 3. The total number of them is 30 students but when the writer did the research only 16 students were presents. In collecting data, the writer gave a test in form of text that the writer prepared. The text consist of 12 sentences written in English and should be translated by the students into Indonesian, and then students translated it back into English.The text is entitled “ How the Tortoise Got its Shell”. The result of this study shows that from the total of 192 sentences produced by the students, only 84 (43,75 %) correct sentences and the wrong sentences are 108 (56,25 %). So, the conclusion of this study are : (1) there are some differences between the back translated English text and the original text.(2) the language elements that distort the meaning of the original text are the grammatical structure ( tenses, article, preposition and modals) and the vocabulary of the students. Therefore, here the writer would like to offer some suggestion as follows: (1) The teacher of English especially the English teacher of the eleventh grade Students of SMAN 7 Kupang is expected to focus on grammar and give more translation exercises especially on comparing between students translation and the original text to improve students grammar and vocabulary.(2) The students are suggested to learn English grammar dan vocabulary. Besides that, the students expected to practice translation from English language into Indonesian language, and translate the text back into English so they can compare the meaning, and the structure of the text.
