Abstract

This study is entitled “AN ANALYSIS ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN ENGLISH CONVERSATION OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK ST THERESIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. It aims at answering the following questions: 1) Do the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 commit grammatical errors in their conversations? 2) What are the types of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in their conversations? 3) What is the most type of grammatical errors committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in their conversations?. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To identify and describe whether the eight grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 commit errors in English conversation. (2) To identify and describe the types of grammatical errors committed by the eight grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in English conversation. (3) To identify and describe the most type of error committed by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in English Conversation. The writer used descriptive method. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang, especially class VIIID. The total number is 28 students. There were 11 students as the sample of the study chosen randomly. In collecting the data, the writer used conversation and the topics were “Birthday Party”, “Hobby”, “Holiday”, “At the Zoo” and “In the Supermarket”. All of the students performed their conversation that they had chosen and were recorded by the writer. The result of the analysis shows that (1) The eighth grade students especially from class VIIID of SMPK St. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 commit errors in conversation. (2) The kinds of errors committed by the students are Omission 20 (48.78%), Misformation 11 (26.82%), and Addition 9 (21.95%). And (3) The most type of grammatical error committed by the students is Omission 20 (48.78%). Allthough speaking is not an English subject at the junior high school but the students should practise speaking English. Based on the result of the research, the suggestions are as follow: (1) The students should learn more grammar especially the grammatical aspect. (2) English teachers should pay more attention on students’ grammatical errors by providing exercises and drilling on grammatical aspects particularly tenses.
