Abstract

This study is entitled “An Analysis on the Translation from Bahasa Indonesia into English Produced by the Tenth Grade Students of SMK Pelayaran Kupang in the School year 2015/ 2016”. The study was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the translation of the the tenth grade students of SMK Pelayaran Kupang in school year 2015/2016 good or not? (2) What are the difficulties faced by tenth grade students in doing the translation? The objectives of the study are (1) To find out whether the tenth grade students of SMK Pelayaran Kupang translation is good or not. (2) To know the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMK Pelayaran Kupang in translating the text. The method applied in this study was descriptive Method. The subject of the study was tenth grade students of SMK Pelayaran Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. There were 31 students in this class but when the researcher conducted his research there were only 18 students joined classrom that day. The researcher treated all the students joined classroom that day as a subject of the study. The instrument used was an Indonesian text about Lumba-lumba. The result of the study shows that (a) The translation made by tenth grade students of SMK Pelayaran Kupang in the school year 2015/ 2016 is categorized as bad translation. In fact, the total number of sentences translated by the eighteen students is 270. Out of these sentences, 121 (44,82%) of the sentences are classified as good translation, and 149 (55.18) of the sentences are bad translation. (b) The difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMK Pelayaran Kupang are grammar, vocabulary, and the content. In grammatical aspect they used inappropriate tenses, modals, personal subject, possessive adjective and in vocabulary aspect they could not choose the word correctly, so it can influence the meaning of the sentence. Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests the following. (1) For the English teachers, of the researched school they should give more emphasis in teaching the English vocabulary and grammar. These two elements are very necessary in doing a good translation. They need to pay special attention to English grammar particularly in tenses, modals personal subject, and possessive adjective. (2) The students need to enrich their stock of vocabulary and improve their grammar if they want to make a good translation.
