The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang. The total number of the eighth grade students was 702 distributed in 20 classes. But in this study, the writer chose Class Eight A. They consisted of 30 students. In collecting the data, the writer used translation test. The test consists of eighteen sentences of recount text written in Indonesian language. The result of the study shows that the translation of recount text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 is LITERAL TRANSLATION. In fact only 427 or 75.73 % of the total 540 sentences are Literal Translation while 114 or 21.10 % others are Idiomatic Translation. From literal translation, there are some students who tried to modify the text and grammar of source language to use acceptable sentence structure in the target language. It is called Modified Literal. In this part, the students produced 263 of the total 427 sentences of Literal Translation or 48.69%. However, the students still classify into Literal Translation because the results of the students‟ translation of words, sentences, phrases are still unnatural and sometimes have a different meaning. Besides that, the writer finds out 108 sentences which produce by 6 students or 18.31 % of 30 students are Idiomatic Translation. While for Literal Translation, the writer finds out 402 sentences that produce by 22.33 students or 82.01 % of 30 students. The common areas of difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Kupang in translating a recount text from Bahasa Indonesia into English are lack of grammatical forms and lexical forms. Based on the result of the research, some suggestions are offered by the writer. (1) For the English Teachers, they should give more exercises to the students in translating a text at least one topic in every English meeting from Indonesian language into English. Besides that, the teachers should be expected to focus teaching the students in translating a text or a sentence using grammatical form and lexical items of the target language (English) by giving them the way how to translate very well or some translation procedures or techniques when the students try to translate a text or a sentence. (2) For the Students, they are suggested to learn more about English grammar and lexicon or lexical grammar of English and practice translation both from Bahasa Indonesia into English and they are expected to practice more in translating a text or a sentence from Bahasa Indonesia into English.
