Abstract

This study is entitled “ AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION FROM BAHASA INDONESIA INTO ENGLISH OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAK GIOVANNI KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: 1). Is the translation from Indonesian language into English done by the eleventh grade students of SMAK Giovanni Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 good or bad? 2.) What are the areas of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMAK Giovanni Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in translating a text from Indonesian language into English? In line with the problem statements, this study is carried out to gain the following objectives: 1). To know whether the translation from Indonesian language into English done by the eleventh grade students of SMAK Giovanni Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 is good or bad. 2).To find out the areas of difficulties faced by the eleventh grade students of SMAK Giovanni Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in translating a text from Indonesian language into English. The method used in this study is Descriptive method. This method is employed to clarify the problems of the study and to describe the result of the study. The subject of the study is the eleventh grade students of SMAK Giovanni Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. There were 22 students taken from XI Science Program. The result of analysis shows that the translation of the students as class is classified as a good translation. In fact, there are 219 (71.10%) of the total 308 sentences are correct while 89 (28.90%) others are incorrect sentences.The difficulties faced by the students occur in tenses, auxiliary verb and passive form. Based on this result, some suggestions can be given by the writer as follows: 1). The teacher of English subject should give more emphasis in teaching the English vocabulary and the students are expected to memorize those English words which are related to the study 2).In teaching English, the teacher should give more exercises to the students in translating a text at least one topic every English meeting from Bahasa Indonesia into English.3).For the students, they are expected to learn more about translation, vocabulary and grammar particularly the use of proper tense, auxiliary verb, and passive form. Many students did mistakes concerning these parts of grammar.
