Abstract

This study is entitled “THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PICTURES IN TEACHING VOCABULARY TO THE SEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SAINT THERESIA CATHOLIC JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL KUPANG IN THE ACADEMIC YEAR 2015/2016”. It aims at answering the following questions: 1) Is teaching vocabulary by using pictures effective for the seventh grade students of Saint Theresia Catholic Junior High School Kupang? 2) What is the students’ vocabulary ability after being taught by using pictures? The aims of the research are 1) To show the effectiveness of using pictures for teaching vocabulary in the seventh grade students of Saint Theresia Catholic Junior High School Kupang. 2) To show the students’ vocabulary ability after being taught by using pictures. It is assumed that the result of the study can enrich the students’ knowledge of vocabulary through pictures especially for the seventh grade students of junior high school of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang. The subject of the study was the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. There were 26 students consisting of 14 boys and 12 girls. The instruments of this study were lesson plans, pictures, pre-test and post-test. There were two cycles in this action research. In pre-test, the students who failed the test were 26 students or 100% and the level of students achievement was very poor. It is determined by the grade achieved by the students. In the post-test I the students who passed the test were 10 students or 50%, while in the post-test II the students who passed the test were 26 students or 100% and the level of students achievement was excellent. It is determined by the grade achieved by the students. The students who passed the test were 26 students who got 80-100. The result of data analysis shows that: 1) The use of pictures as teaching media is effective in teaching vocabulary for the seventh grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. 2) The students’ vocabulary level after being taught using pictures is excellent where all of the students who participated in this study were passed the test and the students’ score average increased from 60,76% in cycle 1 to 90,00% in cycle II. Based on the result of the study the writer offers some sugestions as follows:1) The teachers of English especially the English teachers of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang are suggested to use pictures as one of the media in teaching and learning process to stimulate students’ positive participation. 2) The students of English Department who really want to be professional teachers are recommended to use CAR so that they can reflect the weaknesses in teaching and learning process, then they can prepare new strategy to improve the weaknesses in the next meeting.
