Abstract
This study is entitled: “A Study on The Ability in Pronouncing English Words by the Seventh Grade Students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016.” The study is conducted to answer the following questions: 1. Are the seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 able to pronounce English words taught to them? 2. What is the ability level of seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in pronouncing English words? 3. What words are mispronounced by the seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016? And the objectives of this study were 1) To know whether the seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 are able to pronoun English words or not. 2) To know the ability level of the seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in pronounce English words. 3) To know the words mispronounced by of the seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. The study was conducted in order to know whether the seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang able to pronounce English words, to find out their ability level, and to find out the mispronounce committed by the students. This study was limited on pronouncing English words. In obtaining the data, the writer applied the descriptive method. The subject of the study was the fifteen students in class VII-E. The instrument used in this study was the pronunciation test. The result of the study shows that 1) The seventh grade students of SMPK ST. Theresia Kupang were able to pronounce English words. 2) The students’ ability level in pronouncing English words are varied from Excellent 4 students with the percentage (26.6%), Very good 8 students with the percentage (53.3%), Good 3 students with the percentage (20%). The scores of students’ pronunciation the researcher could find the ability level of the whole class is 8.5 and categorize as Very good. 3) There are 36 out of 90 English words were mispronounced by students. In fact, most of the students committed mistakes in pronouncing the words: Verb (Accept), Noun (Accent), Adjective (Honest), and Adverb (Fast). The least mistakes were on the words: Noun (Zebra and Wall), Adjective (Dirty and Famous), Adverb (Many, Most, Twice and Very). Based on the result of the study, the writer suggests: The writer deems necessary to give some suggestions regarding the result of the study. For the teachersto improve the mistakes committed by the students, the English teacher should pay attention to the students’ pronunciation by correcting them when they misspelled the words. For the students,the students should drill themselves in pronouncing English words. This can be done by consulting dictionaries both manual and electronic dictionaries. Other researchers,they are suggested to design and to conduct further study about students’ Pronouncing English Words in with bigger samples.
