Abstract

This study is entitled “ USING JIGSAW TECHNIQUE IN IMPROVING SPEAKING ABILITY OF THE ELEVENTH STUDENTS OF SMAK FRATERAN MAUMERE IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. It was conducted in order to answer the following question: does the use of jigsaw improve students‟ speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Frateran Maumere? The objectives of the study is to find out whether or not the use of jigsaw improves the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Frateran Maumere in the school year 2015/2016. This study is classified as Classroom Action Research (CAR). This study was conducted in two cycles, which consists of: Planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The instruments used in this data are test, field note, questionnaire and observation sheet. The subject of the study was the eleven grade students of SMAK Frateran Maumere, XI IPA 2. The result of this test shows that using jigsaw technique improves the speaking ability of the eleventh grade students of SMAK Frateran Maumere. The result shows that there is an improvement in their tests. In pre-test, the students‟ speaking ability level was average ( 3,9), while in the post-test cycle 1 it improved to above average( 4,59) and in the post-test cycle 2 their speaking ability heightened to very good level( 5). In addition, students‟ participation in the learning process increased, they interacted with their friends using English. Based on the result above, the researcher wants to give some suggestions. Teacher is expected to use Jigsaw technique in speaking class because it proved that Jigsaw technique can improve students‟ speaking ability. And also for the students, students are the key of success or not a teaching and learning process can be in class. Students are expected to be more take part actively in class because they are the main thing in learning process.
