Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON READING COMPREHENSION ABILITY OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK STA.THERESIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016“. This study was conducted to answer the following questions : 1). Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang able to understand the text that they have read? 2). What is the ability level of students in comprehending a reading text? 3). What are the difficulties faced by the students in comprehending the reading text?. The objectives of the study are : 1). To find out whether or not the eighth students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang comprehend the reading text that they have read. 2). To find out the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang in comprehending the reading text. 3). To find out the difficulties faced by the students in comprehending the reading text. The method used in this study was Descriptive Method. Total respondents were 28 students and the instrument used in gathering the needed data was test. The test consist of 20 items of multiple choice test and 10 items of essay test. The result of analysis indicates that the eighth grade students of SMPK Sta. Theresia Kupang are not so able to understand the text that they have read and their level of ability are as follows: 7 students (25%) who got below average level, ranging from 6.6 – 7.5. 2 students (7%) who got very poor level, ranging from 2.6 –3.5 and 1 student (4% ) who got bad level, ranging from 1.6 – 2.5. Beside that there are 18 students 64% of 28 students who passed the test and their level of ability as follows: 7 students (25%) who got fairly good level, ranging from 6.6 – 7.5 and 11 students (39%) who got average level, ranging from 5.6 – 6.5. The ability level of the whole students is average (5.62). The difficulty faced by the students in comprehending the reading text is they do not understand some words in the text like sinking, unsinkable, scramble, etc. There are some suggestions for the English teacher to teach well the Reading subject to the students, teach them how to read and give more tasks and exercise to the students regarding reading comprehension.
