Abstract

This study is entitled “ A Study On Translation of Descriptive Text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki in the School Year 2015/2016 ”. It was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the translation of descriptive text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki in the school year 2015/2016 good or bad? (2) What are the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki in the school year 2015/2016 in doing translation of the descriptive text from Bahasa Indonesia into English ? The objectives of the study are the following (1) To know whether the translation of descriptive text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki in the school year 2015/2016 is good or bad. (2) To find out the difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki in the school year 2015/2016 in doing translation of a descriptive text from Bahasa Indonesia into English. The writer used qualitative method to describe students’ translations. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki. But for this study the writer chose VIII A. The total number of students in this class is 30 students, but only 24 students were chosen because 6 students were absent. In collecting the data, the writer used translation test written in Indonesian language. In the test the writer provided an Indonesian text entitled “Tas Regina”. The students were asked to translate the text. The test consists of 15 sentences. The text was translated into English. In fact only 120 (33.33 % ) sentences are Good and 240 (66.67 % ) sentences are Bad.The result of the study shows that : (1) The translation of descriptive text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the eighth grade students of SMPK St. Yoseph Noelbaki in the school year 2015/2016 is classified as BAD. (2) The areas of difficulties faced by the students were lack of grammatical structure of English knowledge. The students commited many grammatical mistakes regarding the wrong use of subject-verb agreement, the wrong use of possessive marker, pluralization, missing verb, wrong word order, in complete sentence, and wrong word choice. The wrong use of these grammatical aspects disorted the original meaning of the content.Hence, the writer provides some suggestions as the following: (1) The teacher of English needs to pay attention to the grammartical aspects and the word choice, such as the correct word order in a sentence, the use of subject-verb agreement in a complete sentence, and particulary, the correct of possessive markers, pluralization, and the correct word order in the sentence.(2) The students need to pay attention to the grammartical aspects and the word choice, such as the correct word order in a sentence, the use of subject-verb agreement in a complete sentence, and particulary, the correct of possessive markers, pluralization, and the correct word order in the sentence and improve their writing learn more the English grammar and need to improve their writing by paying attention to enrich their stock of vocabulary.
