Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on Terms of Address used in Nangaroro Dialect of Nagekeo Language”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the terms of address used in Nangaroro dialect for addressing people? (2) What are the factors of addressing people using certain terms of address in Nangaroro dialect? The objectives in detail are as follow: (1) To find out the terms used to address people in Nangaroro dialect of Nagekeo language. (2) To describe the factors of addressing people using certain terms of address in Nangaroro dialect. The result of the study is useful for both the academic world and the practical objective life of society, especially the native speakers of Nangaroro of Nagekeo Regency. The study was conducted in Ute Toto village, Nangaroro Aekana District, Nagekeo Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The data were obtained through interview. The data show that the terms of address used in Nangaroro can be classified on their family relationship and non family relationships, their age, gender and social status. In social status, the writer classifies into three categories: higher status, the same and lower status. Nangaroro society uses the forms of address to keep their relationship with other people. Some terms of address in family relationship that can be used in non family relationship are like: Ine „mother‟, Ema„father‟, Nala „brother‟, Weta„sister‟, Ari „brother‟. They used these term because the addresser has relationship with the addressee, their degree of familiarity, and their power in relation to each other. They can address people based on age, gender, and social status. In Nangaroro society, for higher status, the addresser use the terms ine, ema. The same and lower status, the addresser uses the terms ine, ema, ka’e, ari, and doa/mokodoa. The terms of address, like ine, ema, nala, weta, baba can be used to address unfamiliar people. The Nangaroro people are suggested to keep speaking their language, especially the terms of address to keep good social relationship in communication.
