Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on the Term of Address in East Manggarai Dialect of Manggarai Language”. The aims of this study are to answer the following questions: (1).What are the terms used in East Manggarai dialect for addressing people? (2). How do people in East Manggarai dialect address people based on family relationship and non family relationship considering age, gender, and social status? The result of the study is useful for both the academic world and the practical life of society, especially the native speaker of East Manggarai of East Manggarai Regency. This study was conducted in Ranaloba Village, Borong District, East Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara Province. The data were obtained through interview and interaction. The data show that the terms of address used in East Manggarai dialect can be classified on their family relationships and non family relationships, their age, gender, and social status. In social status, the writer classified into three categories: higher status, the same, and lower status. East Manggarai Society used the terms of address like ene, ema, bapak guru, ema samat, ema bupati, aze, kae’e. East Manggarai Society also used the terms of address to keep their relationship with other people. Some terms of address in family relationship that can be used in non family relationship are like, ene „mother‟, ema ‘father’, nara ‘brother‟, weta „sister‟, aze ‘younger brother/sister, ka’e ‘elder brother/sister‟. They use these terms because the addresser has relationship with the addressee, their degree of familliarity, and their power in relation to each other. They can address people based on age, gender, and social status. In East Manggarai Society, for higher status, the addresser use the terms ene, ema. The same and lower status , the addresser uses the terms ene, ema, aze, ka’e, and woe. The terms of address, like ene, ema, weta, nara can be used to address unfamiliar people. The East Manggarai Society are suggested to keep speaking their language, especially the terms of address to keep good social relationship in communication.
