Abstract

Principal problem in this research How intuitive thinking characteristic of students in solving mathematical problems on the subject of cubes and blocks in class XI SMAK Giovanni Kupang, Academic Year 2015/2016. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. Data collection techniques that provide problem-solving task (TPM) to students, followed by with an interview conducted by an interview based on the guidelines which prepared based on the indicator characteristics of intuitive thinking and subsequently observations workmanship every subject which is implemented based on the observation sheet. This study used three subjects were selected based on their level math skills that students are capable of mathematical high, medium and low. The subject of research is also based on the results of consultation with subject teachers of mathematics, but not getting loose of the level of mathematical ability. The results of this research, Based on explanation data and findings of the research, found several similarities and differences in the characteristics of intuitive thinking among subjects with high mathematical ability, subjects with medium math mathematical ability and subjects with low mathematical ability in solving mathematical problems. The similarities of the characteristics of thinking intuitive two subjects in solving these problems, among others, subject with high mathematical ability and subject with medium mathematical ability equally answer the question directly or sudden or immediate, subjects using the ability of the combination of formulas and algorithms owned and subjects using the steps, rules based on knowledge and experience. So that subjects with high math ability and math skills subjects were equally use intuition in completing TPM 1 and TPM 2, namely Power Of syntesis and Common Sense. While the differences in the characteristics of intuitive thinking between three subjects in solving the problem lies in subjects with low mathematical ability did not use intuition in completing TPM 1 and TPM 2. Based on results of this research, it is expected that teachers give more attention to students who have low skill levels who don’t use intuition in solving the problem, because intuition thinking is very important in resolving problems quickly and accurately.
