Abstract

The main problem in this research is how the understanding of junior high school students in solving mathematical problems subject integers. This study aims to determine how the understanding of junior high school students in solving mathematical problems based on mathematical ability. The subjects in this study consisted of three students are selected based on the level of mathematical ability, namely, high-ability students mathematics, mathematical ability students medium and low math ability students. The data used is a matter of the test, an interview and then the data were analyzed descriptively through three stages of reduction, data presentation stage and stage inference. From the results of the descriptive analysis of the work and interviews. Students are highly skilled and capable students are completing the problem in accordance with the steps to be able to answer questions correctly. While the subject of their poor performance in solving problems not use steps to resolve so well that the answer is not quite right. The results of this study show that students highly skilled and capable students currently have the same understanding of the integers is very good so that it can resolve the issue in accordance with the steps to resolve than students less capable yet fully understand the material integers, it can be seen from the results of work that do not use the appropriate steps. By because it is advisable to lower-ability students to learn more understanding than on memorizing the material in order to work on the problems and was able to complete the appropriate steps are appropriate.
