Abstract

The title of this research: the effectiveness of using the empty chair technique through individual counseling to improve students' interpersonal communication. The problems studied in the research are 1) why the empty chair technique through individual counseling can be used to improve students' interpersonal communication?, 2) what is the procedure for using the empty chair technique through individual counseling to improve students' interpersonal communication? and 3) Is the empty chair technique through individual counseling effective for improving students' interpersonal communication?. The purpose of this study was to find out (1) the reasons for using the empty chair technique through individual counseling to improve students' interpersonal communication, (2) the procedure for using the empty chair technique through individual counseling to improve student interpersonal communication and (3) the effectiveness of using the empty chair technique. through individual counseling to improve students' interpersonal communication. This research uses literature study method. The object of study in this research is the empty chair technique, individual counseling and interpersonal communication. Sources of data used in this study are secondary data sources. The type of data used is qualitative data. In this study the technique used is the empty chair technique, because this technique can be used to improve students' interpersonal communication, through the empty chair technique students are trained to portray themselves and imagine other people sitting in front of them, then these students communicate with the person he imagined. Through the empty chair technique, students are trained to convey the problems they are experiencing through the medium of the chair as a means of practicing communication. The individual counseling process to improve students' interpersonal communication is carried out in three stages, namely, the initial stage of counseling, the middle stage (the work stage), and the final stage of counseling. Meanwhile, the process of applying the empty chair technique through individual counseling is carried out in the middle stage (working stage) of counseling which is carried out in five stages, namely, the beginning stage, clearing the ground stage, the existential encounter stage, integration stage, and ending stage. The results of this study prove that the empty chair technique through individual counseling is effective in improving students' interpersonal communication. This is supported by an article on the results of research conducted by Fauzi (2018) by proving that after being given treatment using the empty chair technique, there was an increase in interpersonal communication of research subjects. Based on the results of the study, the researchers give suggestions to: 1) readers to make more efforts to increase insight, knowledge, and understanding of the empty chair technique through individual counseling to improve student interpersonal communication, 2) BK teachers, to further deepen their knowledge and improve skills in applying techniques empty chair through individual counseling to improve students' interpersonal communication, 3) researchers, are expected to increase their skills in applying the empty chair technique through individual counseling to improve students' interpersonal communication.
