Abstract

This thesis is entitled “Vocabulary Mastery in Context Through Extensive Reading''. It was conducted to answer the following questions (1) Do students of Grade XII of SMAK Giovanni Kupang know the meaning of words given in context in extensive reading? (2) What is their mastery level? Based on the statements above, the objectives of the study were: (1) To find out whether students of Grade XII of SMAK Giovanni know the meaning of words given in context in extensive reading. (2) To find out their mastery of level. The subjects of this study were 10 students of Grade XII of SMAK Giovanni Kupang. In collecting the data the writer used a qualitative descriptive method and the instrument used was a 40-item multiple-choice. The result of the analysis showed that there are three categories which include, excellent categorization (grades 88-93), good categorization (grades 70-85), and failed categorization (grades 65). Based on the result of this study, the following was the suggestion for: (1) For English Teachers. Teachers should teach students to improve their English vocabulary mastery in the context through extensive reading. (2) For students of class XII Language SMAK Giovanni Kupang. Students must be able to read in English so that the meaning of each word in the text can be known well. Students also have to read more every day in order to improve good vocabulary mastery. Daily reading activities, can improve students' abilities through vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and knowledge.
