Abstract
This article focuses on the thought of Edward Wadie Said in his masterpiece Orientalism: Western Conceptions of the Orient (1978). In his work, Said seeks to dismantle the inequality of relations and epistemological biases produced by the West over the East through the study of orientalists. As a postcolonial theory, Edward Said's emancipatory view is a form of counter ideology to the dominant ideology built and established by the West. Edward Said countered the orientalist view with an assumption that the East had its image of being squalorous and not a static fact. Therefore, the knowledge constructed by the West over the East is subjective and politically charged. Through this study, Said hopes that the East can formulate itself, assert its identity and not allow its identity to be constructed from the outside. Moreover, as an independent nation, the East should be able to get out of the intellectual traps established by the West and realize itself as an autonomous subject.
