Abstract

This study is entitled " Politeness Strategies in Expressing Disagreement Used By Students Of English Education Study Program Nusa Cendana University Kupang in the academic year 2021/2022” this study was conducted to find answers to two questions; (1) What kinds of politeness strategies applied by the students of English education study program Nusa Cendana University in expressing disagreement when communicating in English? (2) Which of the politeness strategies is mostly used by students of English Study Program Nusa Cendana University in expressing disagreement?. The method used in this study is the quantitative method. The objective of use this method is to find out what kinds of politeness strategies applied by the students of English education study program Nusa Cendana University in expressing disagreement when communicating in English and to find out the most dominant politeness strategy used by students of English Study Program Nusa Cendana University in expressing disagreement. The subject of the study was the students of Nusa Cendana University Kupang from the 4th-semester students. The participants were 25 students who were selected. They were asked to respond to 15 different situations using politeness strategies. The instrument used by the writer to compile data is the DCT (Discourse Completion Test). Next, the researcher made a DCT which was then given to the respondent. The researcher copied the data obtained after collecting the DCT, and then the researcher classify, quantify, and analyzed the data. In this study, the researcher found that there are 3 strategies in Brown and Levinson’s theory, namely Bald On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness used by the participants in expressing disagreement based on 15 situations given by the researcher, it give results as follows: Bald On Record strategy appeared 58 times with the percentage of (29.29%). Positive politeness strategy occurred 51 times with percentage of (25.75 %). Negative Politeness strategy appeared 89 times with percentage of (44.94%). From the data analysis above, it can be concluded that the most dominant politeness strategy use by the participants in expressing disagreement is Negative politeness strategy with 89 participants with the percentage (44.94 %)
