Abstract

This study is entitled "Politeness Expression in Refusing in Tetun Language spoken by people in Desa Kletek” this study was conducted to find answers to two questions. (1) What are Politeness Expression in Refusing that people used in Tetun Language of Kletek Dialect? (2) Which of politeness Expression in Refusing are motsly used by the speaker of Kletek. The method used in this study is the qualitative method. The objective of use this method is to know the politeness Expression in Refusal that people used in Tetun Langua of Kletek Dialect. And to find out the mostly frequently used politeness Expression in Refusing by speaker of Kletek. The subject of the study was the people in Desa Kletek. The participants were 20 people who were selected. They were asked to respond to 9 different situations using politeness strategies. The instrument used by the writer to compile data is the FTA (Face Threatening Act). Next, the researcher made a FTA which was then given to the respondent. The researcher copied the data obtained after collecting the FTA, and then the researcher classify, quantify, and analyzed the data. In this research, the researcher found that there are 4 strategies in Brown and Levinson’ theory, namely Bald On Record, Positive Politeness, Negative Politeness and Off Record used by the participants in Refusing based on 9 situations given by the reseacher, it give results as follows: Bald On Record strategy was used by 8 participants with percentage 4.0%, Positive politeness strategy was used by 80 participants with percentage 32.0%, Negative Politeness strategy was used by 20 participants with percentage 10.0% and Of - Record strategy was used by 8 participants with percentage 4.0%. From the data analysis above,it can be conclude that the most dominant politeness strategy using by the participants in Refusing is Positive politeness strategy with 80 participants and 32.0%.
