Abstract

This study entitled A Study On Refusal Strategies Used By English Teachers Of Senior High School In Adonara Timur In Responding To Requests. This study was conducted to find out the answer for one research problem, it is what are the refusal strategies used by English teachers of senior high school in Adonara Timur in responding to requests. The method used in this study was qualitative method. The objective of this study was to find out the refusal strategies used by English teachers of senior high school in Adonara Timur in responding to requests. The participants in this study were 13 English teachers of senior high school in Adonara Timur. They were asked to respond to 10 different situations that have prepared by the writer. The instrument used in this study was DCT (Discourse Completion Test). The writer used the theory of Beebe et. al (1990), who classified types of refusal strategies, they are direct, indirect, and adjuncts. The result of the study showed that there are three refusal strategies used by English teachers of senior high school in Adonara Timur , they are indirect strategies, direct strategies, and adjuncts.
