Abstract

This thesis is entitled “A Study on Request Strategies in Daily Use Performed by Indonesian English Teachers”. This study was done to answer the following questions, 1) What are the request strategies performed by the Indonesian English teachers in daily use? 2) What are the most common request strategies used by the Indonesian English teachers in daily use? The objectives of this study are, 1) To find out the request strategies performed by the Indonesian English Teachers in daily use. 2) To find out the most common request strategies used by the Indonesian English teachers in daily use. The participants were 10 English teachers from different levels in Kupang City. They were asked to respond to 10 different situations using requests strategies. The instrument used by the writer to compile data is the DCT (Discourse Completion Test). Then, the researcher made a DCT which was then given to the respondent. The researcher copied the data obtained after collecting the DCT, and then the researcher classify, quantify, and analyzed the data. In this study, the researcher found that there are were 6 strategies in Trosborg' theory used by participants, namely Hints, Ability/Willingness, Need and Demand, Performatives, Imperatives and Permission. Based on 10 situations given by the researcher, results as follows : Hints strategy appeared 1 time with the percentage of 1,0%. Ability/Willingness strategy appeared 78 times with the percentage of 78,0 %. Need/Demand appeared 1 time with the percentage 1,0%. Performatives appeared 4 times with the percentage 4,0%. Imperatives strategy appeared 8 times with the percentage of 8,0 %. Permission strategy appeared 8 times with the percentage of 8,0 %. From the data analysis above, it can be concluded that the most dominant request strategy used by the participants is Willingness/Ability.
