Abstract

This study is entitled saying Apology in Uab Meto spoken by People in Oelneke Village, TTU Regency. The research question of this study is what are the expressions of Apology in Uab Meto Spoken by People in Oelneke Village, TTU Regency? The objective of this study is to find out the expressions of Apology in Uab Meto. The data were collected by using interview and observation which were facilitated by leading questions. Both the interview and observation were done on the spot. The primary data (oral data) is utterances in Uab Meto through interview and it is recorded. The result shows that there 3 are types of apology in Uab Meto spoken by people in Oelneke village,TTU Regency. They are Apology to calm anger, apology from guilt and apology for being a polite person. The finding of this study is influenced by the context of communication related to the situation: problem and opponent. The issue also greatly affects the use of the apology type. If the problem is bad then it should automatically use the kind of apology that comes from the deep regret. For example “ mumnauman kau ( forgive me, have mercy on me) or au usanut au nekak ( I humble myself) but if the problem is not too bad then it will use the type of apology that is commonly used. for example au ‘toet maaf ( I am sorry), naika muto’ (don’t be angry) naika ‘mnek tenab (don’t be bad thinking). The common used apology strategies are explanation and acknowledgment of responsibility strategy. The experts of linguistics are suggested to do a further study to confirm and extend the linguistics evidence of expressions of Apology in Uab Meto. Uab Meto Speakers especially elders should keep their native language as their identity through organizing various kinds of competitions in national and religious events such as Takanab etc.
