Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN WRITING DESCRIPTIVE TEXT OF THE EFL LEARNERS”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions; (1) Are the second semester students of English Education Study Program at Widya Mandira Catholic University able to write descriptive text? (2) What is the level of ability of the second semester students of English Education Study Program at Widya Mandira Catholic University in writing descriptive text? The objectives of the study are to find out whether or not the Second semester students of English Study Program at Widya Mandira Catholic University able to write descriptive text and their level of writing ability. The method used in this study was a descriptive Quantitative method. The aim of this method is to give or explain a situation which is observed while this research is done. The subject of this study was the second semester students of English Education Study Program at Widya Mandira Catholic University. The samples were taken by used simple random sampling with a number of samples was 15 students at second the second semester students of English Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University. In collecting data, the researcher used writing test to find out the students’ ability in writing descriptive text by analyzing 5 elements of writing such us content, organizing idea, grammar, vocabulary and mechanics. The result of analysis showed that 9 students or 50% was categorized in excellent with the highest percentage of indicator was organizing idea (89 %). 7 students or 38.90 % was categorized in good with the highest percentage of indicator was vocabulary (77.4%). 1 student or 5.55% was categorized in average with the highest percentage of indicator was vocabulary (78%). 1 student or 5.55% was categorized in fair with the highest percentage of indicator were content and vocabulary (50%). And there is no students was categorized as poor. Those all result the researcher accumulated the total score then average and the mean score of students writing descriptive text was 76.33 and the highest mean score of indicators was vocabulary 81.16. As a result, the students’ ability in writing descriptive text in second semester students of English Study Program of Widya Mandira Catholic University categorized as good.
