Abstract

This research departed from the researcher's concern for the waning position of women who are presented in local culture, one of which is local stories. This research was conducted by examining aspects of communication and language to enrich the public's insight into the representation of women's figures, particularly in local stories. In the province of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), many local stories have developed in the community, some of which are already familiar to the public. However, the existence of women was not very popular in its distribution. Even research that examined women in local stories was still relatively small. Therefore, this study discussed the representation of women in local stories with cultural feminism as one of the critical perspectives in the communication tradition with four data collection procedures, namely document studies, in-depth interviews, artifact studies, and observations. This study used a critical discourse analysis method, which described the representation of female characters in local stories based on the position of the subject object and the position of the reader. The local story of Mbu'e Wondo that developed in the Niondoa community, Keo Tengah, Nagekeo, NTT has also become a high-value communication medium as a tool for moral and character education for the community, telling about a girl from Wondo Hamlet who went to look for snails, but was trapped in a holed stone and eventually married by a whale, but thanks to the help of the muskrat, the Wondo girl can return to her family and make a trick to kill the whale while asking for the girl back. This story also indirectly narrates the rock legends of Mbu'e Wondo and Dede Ngembu in Keo Tengah, as well as the flood in the Dowo Doke area as a result of the social contract between Embu Uta and the universe after the annulment of Mbu'e Wondo's marriage. The results of the study showed that the representation of the female character as herself was thoughtful, resigned, brave, strenght, respected, and had a beautiful face with a strong and intuitive spiritual soul. The representation of the female character as a sister who cooperates, acts quickly, is helpful, and cares, while as a child and the youngest is also shown as a person who wants to be protected and does not want to be separated because she is most loved. The representation of the female character as a weak wife, controlled and sheltered behind the family, as well as the representation of the female character as a mother, namely the peacemaker, the unifier of the universe and humanity, as well as the supporter and giver of life. Lastly, the female character was the cosmos who cares and is organized. Even in this local story, if it is associated with cultural feminism, then feminine values such as the character Mbu'e who is peaceful, intuitive, gentle, supportive of life, and so on need to be applied as a lifestyle while loosening extreme forms of masculinity such as violence.
