Abstract

Students' critical thinking skills, especially in science subjects, are less prominent in students because teachers only provide direct knowledge to students without providing opportunities for students to actively participate in learning. Many students just sit and listen but do not understand what the teacher is saying. To overcome this problem, an appropriate learning model is needed, namely the Discovery Learning model. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the Discovery Learning model on the critical thinking skills of class VIII students on the excretory system material at UPTD SMP Negeri 10 Kupang. The type of research used is quantitative research with quasi-experimental methods, with the research design used is nonequivalent control group design. Based on the results of the study, data analysis of students' critical thinking skills on the human excretory system material in the experimental class using the Discovery Learning model showed that the posttest average value was higher than the pretest average value. In the experimental class, the average pretest score was 50.04 while the posttest average was 80.46. In the control class, the average pretest score was 45.21 while the posttest average was 67.14. The number of students who completed the experimental class was 89.29% and those who did not complete were 10.41%. While in the control class the number of students who completed was 17.86% and did not complete was 82.14%. Based on the results of the anacova test using the one-way anacova statistical analysis technique with the help of SPSS Version 23, a probability value (sig) of 0.000 was obtained from the specified significant value of 0.05. Thus the null hypothesis (H0) which states that there is no effect of the Discovery Learning model on students' critical thinking skills is rejected and the alternative hypothesis (Ha) which states that there is an effect of the Discovery Learning model on students' critical thinking skills is accepted. Based on the research results obtained, it can be concluded that the Discovery Learning Model has an effect on the critical thinking skills of class VIII students on the human excretory system material at UPTD SMP Negeri 10 Kupang.
