Abstract

Jigsaw Type is the one of the cooperative learning models for use in heterogeneously small groups with four to six students. There are two sets of groupings: the first set which comprises different groups can be called original group. The second set can be called expert group where a member is taken from each of the original group. The members of expert group become a resource when they assist their original group. The members of the expert group study a certain topic, then return to their original group to explain to the other members the gist of the topic they studied. Each member in the original group gets a chance to be in the expert group as the topic changes. In this study the topics are related to properties of visual tools. The main problem in this research is: How efficient is Jigsaw Type model in cooperative learning when applied to studying chosen topics? This problem will be best answered in detail by the following questions: (1) How well can the teacher manage cooperative learning process using the Jigsaw Type Model? (2) How has Jigsaw Type Model improve the cooperative learning skills of students? (3) What indicator suggests complete learning outcomes using Jigsaw Type Model? (4) How complete is the students’ learning outcome using Jigsaw Type Model? (5) How do the students respond to the cooperative learning process using Jigsaw Type Model? The main purpose of this research is the application of Jigsaw Type Model of Cooperative Learning by: (1) describing teachers’ ability in managing learning process using the Jigsaw Type Model (2) describing students’ cooperative learning skill (3) describing indicator of learning outcomes (4) describing students’ learning outcomes (5) describing students’ response about the learning process using the Jigsaw Type Model. The main subject of this research is the Grade VIII students of SMPK St. Maria Assumpta, Kupang for the school year 2010/2011. The intruments used for data analysis are: management observing sheets for teachers, cooperative learning Jigsaw type, skill observing sheets for students, outcome learning tests, questionnaire students’ response. The descriptive method was used to analyze the data. From the result of the analysed data, it can be concluded that applying cooperative learing model Jigsaw type in the lessons related to visual tools is very useful. It can be explained as follows: (1) Teachers’ ability in managing learning process by applying Jigsaw type is valuable (2) Studens’ skills by applying Jigsaw type is enhanced. (3) Indicator of learning outcomes by applying Jigsaw type is complete. (4) Students’ learning outcomes by applying Jigsaw type is complete. (5) Student’s response about learning process by applying Jigsaw type is very positive. The researcher recommends that a further study of applying Jigsaw Type Model to cooperative learning be applied to other subjects to find out more about its effectiveness to the cooperative learning process of students.
