Abstract

This study was held to find the answer of two questions namely, (1) Is using picture series effective to improve the writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Atambua? (2) What is the students’ level of ability in writing after being taught using picture series? The objectives of the study are to find out whether or not the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri I Atambua in the school year 2014/2015 to find out wheter the use of picture series is effective to improve the writing ability of the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Atambua, to find out the level of ability in writing of the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Atambua after being taugth using picture series.To answer accurately the problem above, Descriptive text was employed in this research to describe the students’ ability to write descriptive text based on picture series. In this study, the researcher conducted a Classroom Action Research of this research. There were three meetings. During the researcher used written test and observation in collecting the data. The use of written test cycle I to measure the students’ skill in writing descriptive text after giving the treatment, and the use of observation was to monitor students` activities during teaching learning process. The subject of the study is the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 1 Atambua in the school year 2014/2015. The writer took VIII A Class of SMPN 1 Atambua which consists of 36 Students and The writer took 15 students to analysis the data. This study is focused on grammar,vocabulary and form. The result of the test showed that the students’ score in the pre-test was 8,46 the students’ score in the cycle I test was 16,86. The achievement of the test showed that the treatment was successful. In line with this result, the researcher concluded that the research improved students’ ability in writing descriptive text. So that there are some suggestion proposed by the writer. They are: 1. For Teacher: Teacher may consider the use of picture series in the teaching of descriptive writing text, because it can motivate students to describe something. 2. for Students: Students should be more interested in English study.
