Abstract

It was conducted to answer the following questions: a) Are the eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kefamenanu able to predict information from the pictures on reading text or not; b) what is the students’ level of ability; The objectives of the study are: a) to find out whether the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kefamenanu able in predict information from the pictures on reading text; b) to find out the students’ level of ability. In order to reach the goal of study the writer chooses descriptive method. To get the needed data, 28 students of the eighth grade of SMPN 1 Kefamenanu in the academic year 2014/2015 were chosen to be the subject of this study. The instrument used in gathering the needed data was a reading test consisting of 10 items of short answer test. The result of the study shows that: a) The eighth grade students of SMPN 1 Kefamenanu in the school year of 2014/2015 particularly those who were from VIII – B class were not fully able to predict the information from the pictures on reading text. b) From the 28 students as the sample, only 2 (7,14%) students got excellent, 4 (14,28%) students got very good, 4 (14,28%) got fairly good, 3 (10,71%) students got average and others 15 (53,57%) got bellow average,poor and very poor. Therefore, it can be said that the ability level of the eight grade students of SMPN 1 Kefamenanu in the school year 2014/2015 in predicting information from the pictures was Average with (60.3%). Based on the result of the study, the writer offers some suggestions to the English teacher at researched school and the students. First,this study might inform the English teacher at SMPN 1 Kefamenanu about the ability of the eighth grade students in predicting information from the pictures on reading text. Therefore the teacher should find out another way or technique in using pictures in improving the students reading comprehension ability and the second, for the students, they should spend more time to study English books and other sources to improve their competence in predicting information from the pictures on reading text.
