Abstract

It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to use WH- question words ? (2) What is the level of ability in using WHQuestions of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 ? While the objective of the study: (1) To find out whether the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 are able to use WH-Question words in their sentences.(2) To know the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using WH- Question words. The writer chose 25 students to be the sample of the study. The instrument of this study was test. It consisted of 30 items. The result of this study shows that the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang are not able to use Wh-question in sentences, the level of mastery of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 10 Kupang in using Wh-questions is “Below Average” (5.57). It is shown that, five (20%) students who got fairly good, nine students (36%) got average, seven students (28%) got below average, and four students (16 %) got poor. The students encounter difficulties in the completion test, arranging word and translated test. The students committed the most errors in using Wh-questions in simple present tense and simple past tense. The difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMP N 10 Kupang lie on using “Who” functioning as subject, “Whose” functioning as possessive, “Whom” functioning as object, “Why” used to ask the reason about something to be asked and “What” used for asking particularly information about somebody / something. Based on the result of this study the following are some suggestions that need to be considered: (1) The teacher should give more explanation and exercises on the use of Whquestions to the students in order that the student mastery level is better. (2) The students must improve their knowledge about using Wh-questions in simple present tense and simple past tense and apply it through listening, speaking, reading and writing.
