Abstract
This study is entitled “A STUDY ON THE MASTERY OF PASSIVE VOICE USED IN SENTENCES OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 6 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. It was conducted in order to answer the following questions: 1.Have the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 KUPANG in the school year 2014/2015 mastered the use of passive voice in the sentences? 2. What is their level of mastery of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang in the use of passive voice in the sentences? The objectives of the study are: (1) to find out whether the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang have mastered the use of passive voice in the sentences or not? (2) To know the students’ level of mastery of the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang in the use of passive voice in the sentences. The method that was used in this study was Normative Survey Method. This method was employed to clarify the problems of the study and to describe the result of the study. The subjects of the study were the eleventh grade students of SMAN 6 Kupang, involving 222 students. But in this study the writer only chose the class of science program III, which consist of 38 students. In collecting the data the writer used test in the form of multiple choices test and essay test. The total number of test item were 40, divided into 30 items for multiple choice test and 10 items in the form of essay test. The results of the data analysis show that the students have mastered the use of passive voice in the sentences. The level of mastery was good because their average mastery is 73.5%.In order to improve the student’s mastery of passive the teachers are expected to give more explanation, and example, in both present progressive tense and simple future tense to students. The teachers of English are expected to teach the passive voice construction completely regarding the concept of to be + past participle, regular and irregular verb, transitive and intransitive verb. Since many students committed mistakes concerning passive voice forming as stated above, they should be given more practices both in the classroom and at home assignments.
