Abstract

The title of this study is “A STUDY ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF USING PICTURES IN TEACHING SPEAKING TO THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA SWASTA TERAKREDITASI PGRI KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/2016”. This study was conducted in order to find out whether the use of pictures are effective or not in teaching speaking to the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 and to find out the ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang. In order to achieve the objective, Classroom Action Research (CAR) was used as the research design. This study was conducted in two cycles in which each cycle consisted of four steps namely Planning, Action, Observation and Reflection. The writer used test (oral test) and observation sheet to gather the data. This study was conducted in SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang. The writer chosed the eleventh grade students of language class as the subject of this study. The class consists of 15 students and there are only 10 students who consistently joined the 2 cycles. In both cycles, the writer conducted teaching learning process by using pictures as teaching media. After the process, the writer gave the test to the students. After analyzing the process exercises and post tests result, the writer found that the use of pictures is effective in teaching speaking to the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. The effectiveness of this picture is indicated by the improvement of students’ average score from Cycle I to Cycle II. In Cycle I, students’ average score is 3.35 (Intermediate) and in the cycle 2 the average score improves to 4.675 (High Advance). The writer would like to offer some suggestions to those who are interested to this study. The first is for English teacher. The use of teaching media such as board game, picture or video to help the students learn the material in teaching learning process, and the second is for other researcher who interested on this teaching media, in using this picture, the picture can be collaborated with other teaching media such as video and audio media to enhance the result of teaching learning process.
