Abstract
The title of this study is “A Study on Sentence Patterns of Soa Dialect of Bajawa Language”. This title is specified into two statement of the problems formulated in the following questions. (1)What are the sentence patterns of Soa dialect of Bajawa Language? (2)What are the similarities and the differences of sentence patterns of Soa dialect in comparison with those of English? This study is intended to describe the sentence patterns of Soa Dialect and to find out the similarities and the differences of Soa Dialect of Bajawa Language. The study was conducted in Bajawa, particularly in Soa District. Descriptive method was used in this study. The data were obtained through elicitation sentences, interview, and note taking during the interview. The obtained data were analyzed through steps of reading, classifying, translating, and interpreting of the formal linguistic meaning using the theory of cultural linguistic (Shaw, 1979). In line with the problem statements, it was found that in Soa dialect of Bajawa language there are seven sentence patterns as the following: (1) Noun – Verb; (2) Noun – Verb – Noun; (3) Noun – Verb – Noun – Noun; (4) Noun – Linking Verb – Noun; (5) Noun – Linking Verb – Adjective; (6) Noun – Noun – Verb – Noun – Complement; (7) Noun – Verb – Adjective. Among these sentence patterns, there are some similarities and differences between Soa dialect and English. The similarities consist the following patterns: (1) Noun – Verb; (2) Noun – Verb – Noun; (3) Noun – Linking Verb – Adjective; (4) Noun – Verb – Noun – Adjective. Beside the similarities, there are differences occuring in Soa dialect. For example: (5) Noun –Verb – Noun - Noun; (6) Noun – Linking Verb – Noun; (7) Noun – Verb – Noun – Adjective. In accordance with the finding of the study, some suggestions are proposed. (1) The teachers of English who teaches English to the students in Bajawa Language background should know the simialirities and the differences on the sentence patterns between Bajawa language and English. They are advised to give more attention to the differences in their teaching, especially in teaching English sentence pattern, so that students can better understand and comprehend about the similarities and the differences of the sentence patterns in English and Bajawa Language. (2) Those who are interesed in the studying of linguistics to carry out further study on the other aspects of this dialect such as the four syntatic structure.
