Abstract

This study is entitled “ A STUDY ON THE ABILITY IN USING DIRECT AND INDIRECT SPEECHES OF THE EIGHTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMPK SANTA FAMILIA KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: 1) What is the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using direct and indirect speeches? 2) What particular areas of problems are faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using direct and indirect speeches? The objectives of this study are as follows: 1) To find out the level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using direct and indirect speeches, 2) To identify the problem areas that are encountered by the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using direct and indirect speeches. The research method used in the study was descriptive method. The subject of the study was the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. However, by using randomly sampling the writer chose two classes, namely 10 students from class VIIIA and 10 students from class VIIIB. The instrument of the study was a test. The result of the study shows that the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 are not able to use direct and indirect speeches, and the level of ability is below average (74.7). The individual level of ability in using direct and indirect speeches can be classified as follows: there is 1 student (5%) who got very good level of ability, there are 5 students (25%) who got good level of ability, there are 4 students (20%) who got fairly good level of ability, there are 2 students (10%) who got average level of ability, there is 1 student (5%) who got below average level of ability, there are 3 students (15%) who got very poor level of ability, there are 2 students (10%) who got bad level of ability, and there are 2 students (10%) who got very bad level of ability. The areas of difficulties faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK Santa Familia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using direct and indirect speeches are how to use TENSES, PRONOUNS AND POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES, ADVERB OF TIME and QUOTES MARK in correct position when they construct direct and indirect speeches. Based on the result of the study, there are some suggestions which need to be considered: 1) For the English teacher: in order to improve the ability in using direct and indirect speeches, the writer would like to suggest that the teacher of English should give the students more practices about direct and indirect speeches, 2) For the students: the students should always be motivated to learn about direct and indirect speeches because direct and indirect speeches are one specific sentence structure which can help student in making sentences.
