Abstract

This study is entitled: “A Study on the Ability in Using Elliptical Sentences of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to use elliptical sentences? (2) What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using elliptical sentences?. The objectives of the study are as follows: (1) To find out whether the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015 are able or not to use elliptical sentences. (2) To know level of ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using elliptical sentences. The method used in this study was normative survey method. The aim of this method is to describe systematically a situation or areas of interest factually and accurately. The subject of this study was the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 (class VIIIA). The total number of the students of class VIIIA was 32 students but there were only 27 students who participated the test. The instrument used in this study was multiple choice test. After analyzing the data, the result of the study shows that: (1) the eighth grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang were able to use elliptical sentences (2) the ability level of the students of SMP Negeri 8 Kupang in using elliptical sentence was 8.9 and classified as ‘Very Good’ level. Based on the result of the study above, the writer would like to offer suggestions for English teacher in general and English teacher of the researched school in particular that she/he should pay attention in teaching elliptical sentences by giving more tasks to the students. So they can understand more about elliptical sentences by doing more tasks about elliptical sentences either in the class room or at home. For the students in general and students in the research school more practice is needed to improve their ability especially in using elliptical sentences.
