Abstract

This study is entitled “The Effectiveness of Using Video in Improving Writing Achievement of the Tenth Grade Students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. This study was held in order to find the answer of two questions. (1) Is using video effective for teaching writing to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015? (2) To what degree is the effectiveness of using video in teaching writing to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015? The objectives of this study are (1) To show the effectiveness of using video for teaching writing to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/ 2015, and (2) To show the degree of effectiveness of using video in teaching writing to the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. This study is limited on three aspects of writing such as grammar, vocabulary and form. This research applied qualitative method. In obtaining the data the writer applied video as a media in teaching writing. Classroom Action Research is used in this research. There were 13 students treated as the subject of this study. The instrument used for this research were observation sheets and and written tests contains some exercises which the last exercise of each cycle taken as the data to be analized. The writer asked the students to write a descriptive text. The implementation of video as a learning aid to improve students ability in writing descriptive text was very effective. It was supported by the significane total class average in Cycle 1 (15,07) and Cycle 2 was (17,52). Based on the analysis of the data, all the students above were able to produce descriptive paragraphs. The writer concludes that use of video in impoving students writing ability in descriptive text is effective interesting and able to motivate the students to learn English. The are some suggestions found by the researcher based on the findings for instance: (1) The teacher may consider the use of video in Teaching of writing descriptive writing text, because it motivates students to describe something. However, they need to prepared the equipment well and plan the time allocation. (2) The students should improve their English ability specifially in writing skill by participating actively in learning process. (3) For further researcher, the result of this study might used as an additioal references for having further study, for instance the use of movie in improving students‟ speaking ability, etc.
