Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN WRITING ENGLISH COMPOSITION OF THE ELEVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMA PGRI KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2015/ 2016”. This study was held to find the answer of two questions. 1. What are the grammatical errors in writing English composition that might be committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016? 2. What are of the most common grammatical errors in writing English composition that might be committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016? The objectives of study are as follows 1. To know the grammatical errors in writing English composition that might be committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. 2. To know the most common grammatical errors in writing English composition that might be committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI in the school year 2015/2016. The method used in this study was descriptive method. The aim of the method is to explain a situation which is observed while this research done. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016. The total number of language class students who consistently joined in this research is 10. The instrument used by the writer to compile the data was written test. The writer gave two topics to the students, namely; “My Interesting Experience” and “My Holiday”. The students were asked to write recount text. They were asked to compose 2 paragraphs. The writer allocated 60 minutes to do the writing test. The result of the study indicates that: (1). The grammatical errors in writing English composition that committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 were misformation, omission, misodering, and addition. The total number of errors was 64, errors in misformation were 49, and errors in omission were 5, errors in misordering were 3 and errors in addition were 7. (2).The most common grammatical errors in writing English composition that committed by the eleventh grade students of SMA PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 was misformation (49), specifically misformation of tense. Based on the result of the study, the suggestion might be as follows: For the English Teacher: (1). Based on the result of the study, the students made some grammatical errors in their writing of recount text especially misformation that dominated by tense form. In this case, the teacher should encourage the students to write a lot pertaining to recount text and the teacher should teach the students how to write a good text especially in writing recount text and give the students chance to practice. For the Students: (1). The students should learn on how to make a good writing and reading information about writing paragraph. And they should practice it frequently. (2). Studying intensively focusing on grammar particularly tense form in writing recount text.
