Abstract
This study is entitled“An Analysis on Grammatical Errors in Descriptive Writing of the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. This study was conducted to answer the following questions: (1) What are the grammatical errors committed by the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in descriptive writing? (2) What are the most common errors committed by the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in descriptive writing? The objectives of this study are as follows. (1) To find out the types of grammatical errors committed by the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in descriptive writing (2) To find out the most common errors committed by the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in descriptive writing. The writer used the descriptive method. It was used to describe the students errors in descriptive writing. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015. The total number of the students is 340. By using purposive sampling the writer only chose class XH consisting of 20 students to become the respondents of this study. In collecting the data, the writer prepared some possible topics and the students may choose one to write a descriptive text. The time allocation was 60 minutes. The result of the analysis shows that: (1) The tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang committed errors. The total number of the errors committed by the students is 130. It covers 99 (76.15%) of misformation errors, 16 (12.31%) of omission errors, 11 (8.46%) of addition errors, and 4 (3.08%) of misordering errors. (2) It is clearly seen that the most common error is misformation errors. A number of suggestions would be offered to many sides in accordance with their competence and responsibility. The English teachers of the tenth grade students of SMAN 5 Kupang are suggested to give more attention to teach the students about grammar, vocabularies, and how to write good descriptive text. The students are suggested to learn more about structure, using personal pronoun, conjunction, to be, and tenses.
