Abstract

This study is entitled “A STUDY ON GRAMMATICAL ERRORS IN SPEAKING OF THE ELVENTH GRADE STUDENTS OF SMAN 3 KUPANG IN THE SCHOOL YEAR 2014/2015”. This study was conducted in order to answer the following questions: : (1).What are kinds of errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 in the school year 2014/2015 in speaking? (2).What are the common errors in speaking English committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 KUPANG in the school year 2014/2015? The objectives of the study were as follows: (1). To describe and explain kinds of errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in speaking. (2). To describe and explain the common errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in speaking. The method that the writer used in this study was descriptive method. This method was used to describe systematically a situation or area of interest factually and accurately. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA 3 Kupang. The total number of eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in the school year 2014 /2015 is 491 students, with total class of 13. In this study, the writer took 15 students from class XI IPA1 as sample. Actually, there are 30 students in that class, but the writer chose only 15 as the sample. In collecting data, the writer used the monolog speech. The topics were favorite movie, favorite teacher, favorite lesson, favorite sport, and favorite food. So the student chose the topic that they liked, and presented it in the front of the class for 3-5 minutes. The monolog speech was recorded and transcribed. The result of analysis shows that the grammatical errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in speaking based on Surface Strategy Taxonomy are Misformation, Omission, Misodering, and Addition. Students’ grammatical errors in speaking consist of those types and the total number of errors is 136. The most frequent errors committed by the eleventh grade students of SMAN 3 Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 is Misformation 69 (50.74%) committed by 14 students, followed by Omission, the total number of errors is 49 (36.02%) committed by 14 students, Addition the total number of errors is 13 (9.56%) committed by 9 students. And Misordering the total number of errors is 5 (3.68%) committed by 5 students. Seeing at the result of the research, the suggestion might be as follows: (1) The students should learn more on how to speak English by concerning the grammatical aspects regarding tenses, verb, noun, adjectives and preposition. (2) The English teachers should pay more attention on the students’ grammatical errors by providing practices on grammatical aspects particularly tenses, verb, noun, conjunction, adjectives and preposition.
