Abstract

This study is entitled A study on Speaking Ability of the Eighth Grade Students of SMP Angkasa Kupang in the Academic Year 2014/2015. This is a study to find out the level of students in speaking English. The writer conducted it in order to answer the questions 1) Are the eighth grade students of SMP Angkasa Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015 able to speak English through dialogue? 2) What is the level of speaking ability of the eighth grade students of SMP Angkasa Penfui Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015 after being taught dialogue. The objective of this study is to know whether or not the dialogue is suitable in teaching speaking English at the eighth students and to know the level of students speaking ability after being taught using dialogue. The data were collected through the speaking test with the criteria of beginner, elementary, intermediate, advance and high advance. The research design used in this study is qualitative-quantitative. Quantitative method includes selecting instruments and collecting data. Qualitative method includes interpreting and reporting research. Twenty-eight students were taken to be the subject of this study to answer the problems. The two steps are teaching speaking using dialogue and the speaking test. The result of the study the dialogue is suitable to used in teaching speaking at the eighth students of SMP Angkasa Penfui Kupang in the academic year 2014/2015 and the level of students after using dialogue in teaching speaking is advance. There are some progresses that the students’ gained namely, 1) During teaching process students try to give the instruction to another student and also try to practice it better. 2) Using visual aid like dialogue text to the student so they can train the conversation well. 3) In the speaking test the teacher ask the students to practice the dialogue in their group given for them. Based on the result, the writer concludes the eighth grade students of SMP Angkasa Penfui Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 are able to speak English through dialogues. The ability level the eighth grade students of SMP Angkasa Penfui Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in speaking through the dialogue is 8.32. it is classified as ADVANCED. It is good for the teacher to use dialogue in teaching learning not only in speaking, but also listening, reading, and writing. However, the teacher is suggested to pay attention to the lack of vocabulary and grammar of the students by teaching and practicing vocabulary and grammar of English, and the students are suggested to learn and practice vocabulary and grammar of English before doing speaking, and be more self convident in presenting speaking in front of the audinces.
