Abstract

This study is entitled “The Ability in Using Simple Past Tense of the Eighth Grade Students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It was conducted to answer the following questions: 1. Are the eighth grade students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 able to use simple past tense in sentences? 2. What is the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using simple past tense in sentences? 3. What arethe problems encountered by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using simple past tense in sentences? The objectives of this study are the following. To know whether the eighth grade students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015are able to use simple past tense in sentences. To find out and to know the ability level of the eighth grade students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using simple past tense in sentences. To find out and to know the problem faced by the eighth grade students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the school year 2014/2015 in using simple past tense in sentences. In this study the writer used normative survey method to analyze and describe the ability level of The Eighth Grade Students of SMPK Sapientia Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015in using the simple past tense in sentences. The respondents of this study were 10 students. The instrument used to gather the data was a test. The numbers of test were 20 items, consisting of 10 numbers of filling in the blankand 10 numbers of translation tests. The student‟s ability level in using simple past tense is 60.5% which is classified “as average” level. In fact, there was 1 (10%) student who got good level; 5 (50%) students who got fairly good level; 1 (10%) student who got average level; 1 (10%) student got who got poor level and 2 (20%) students who got very poor level.Although the result shows that students are able to use the simple past tense. There are still some errors by students in using regular and irregular verb in sentences.Therefore, the writer suggests the following. (1) the English teacher should give the students more explanation and practice about simple past tense in sentences especially in the form of regular and irregular verbs. (2) the students should practice more about the use of simple past tense by doing more exercises about it.
