Abstract

The study is entitled: “A Study on the Ability to Comprehend Narrative Text of the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It aims at answering the following questions: (1) Are the tenth grade students of SMAN 4 Kupang able to understand the narrative text they have read? (2) What is the level ability of the tenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in understanding reading narrative text? While the objectives of the study are: (1) to find out whether or not the tenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang able to understand narrative text. (2) To know the ability level of the tenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in understanding reading narrative text. In conducting the study the writer used Descriptive Method. the subject of the study were 32 (thirty two) students of the tenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015. In collecting the data, the writer prepared 2 (two) reading texts followed by some multiple choice and essay questions. There were, 5 (five) test items of multiple choice and 5 (five) essay questions for task 1. And for task 2, there were 5 (five) test items of multiple choice and 5 (five) essay test questions. So, the total numbers of the test items were 20 (twelve). The students were given 90 (ninety) minutes to read the texts and answer the questions. The result of the study shows that: (1) the Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in The School Year 2014/2015 are able to understand the text they have read. (2) The ability level of the teenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015 in comprehend narrative text was classified as “Very Good”. It is determined by the total percentage of the correct answers for the whole test. It is at 86.25 %. In line with this, there are 8 student (25%) were at excellent level whose grades were among 96-100. Besides, there are 9 students (28.12%) at very good level whose grades were among 86-95. Furthermore, there are 8 students (25%) at good level whose grades were among 76-85. There are 6 students (18.75%) at fairly good level whose grades were among 65-75. Lastly there are three students (3.12%) at average level whose grades were among 56-65.Based on the result above, the writer would like to offer some suggestions for both English teacher and The Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 4 Kupang: (1) The English teacher should give the students more exercises in the classroom interaction or as homework dealing with English reading text. (2) The students should do more exercises themselves dealing with writing a correct word and as often as possible read English texts and try to understand.
