Abstract
This study is entitled “A Study on English Words Pronunciation of the Tenth Grade Students’ of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in the School Year 2014/2015”. It aims to answer the following questions: (1) What is the ability level of the tenth grade students of SMA NEGERI 5 Kupang in English words pronunciation? (2) What are the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMA NEGERI 5 Kupang in English words pronunciation? The objectives of the study are the following: (1) to identify the ability level of tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in English words pronunciation. (2) to identify the difficulties which are faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang in English words pronunciation. In order to solve these problems, the writer used a normative survey method. The subjects of the study were twenty students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang. The result of the research showed that the tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang are enough able to pronounce English words correctly. In other words, they have ability in pronouncing the English words. The student’s ability level is 6.35. It is classified as average according to the standard measurement applied. The tenth grade students of SMA Negeri 5 Kupang have difficulties in pronouncing English words. The difficulties faced by the students lie in the English words with long vowels /i:/, /a:/, /ɔ:/, /u:/, /ɜ:/; the English words with short vowels /ɒ/, /e/, /ae/; the English words with diphthongs /eI/, /əʊ/, /aI/, /aʊ/, /ɔI/, /Iə/, /eə/, /ʊə/; and the English words with consonants /b/, /d/, /g/, /m/, /n/, /v/, /w/, /z/, /ʒ/, /ŋ/, /ð/, and /t/, /k/, /θ/, /∫/, /t∫/ in initial, medial, and final positions. Based on the result above that the writer has found the weakness of the students in pronouncing English words, here the writer would like to give some suggestions to the following persons: (1) For the English Teachers at Researched School : Based on the result of this study it is suggested that the English teachers at the researched school should know not only their students’ ability level and the difficulties faced by the students but also they should adjust to pronounce the English words correctly so they can improve their students’ ability in pronouncing English words and be the model to imitate by the students. (2) For the Tenth Grade Students at Researched School. The students studying English, especially those studying at the researched school are suggested to drill themselves by practicese more about how to pronounce English words correctly. They are suggested to have an appropriate model in practicese the English words pronunciation containing vowels, diphthongs, and consonants such an appropriate dictionary like Oxford or Cambridge to enrich their knowledge in pronouncing the English words. (3) For the Writer : Seeing the result of the study above the writer is motivated to study hard about English words pronunciation and try to get a good way of how to teach them to students. The writer should try to study the English vowels, diphthongs, and consonants in initial, medial, and final positions deeply.
