Abstract

This Thesis is entitled “A Study on the Ability in Constructing Simple Present Tense of the Eleventh Grade Students of SMA Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016’’. This study was conducted in order to answer the following questions : (1). Are the eleventh grade students of SMA Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 able to use the simple present tense? (2). What is the students’ ability level in using simple present tense? The main objectives of this study are: (1). To find out whether the eighth grade students of SMA Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 are able to use simple present tense. (2). To know the ability level of students in using simple present tense. The subject of this study was the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the School Year 2015/2016. The writer chose social class consisting of 15 students, but three of them were absent, so only 12 students were treated as the subject of this study. The instrument that the writer used for gathering the data was a test. The test consisted of (40) test items, they are divided into two types of essay test, namely: 20 test items was change the word in the bracket in simple present form, 20 test items was fill the blanks using the correct simple present tense form. The result of the data analysis shows that: (1). The eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 are able to construct the sentences in simple present form. (2). The ability level of the eleventh grade students of SMA Swasta Terakreditasi PGRI Kupang in the school year 2015/2016 in constructing simple present tense is75.5. It is classified as “Fairly Good”. Based on result of the study, the writer gives some suggestions to following person: (1). For the English teacher: (a). The teacher should teach and give more explanation to the students how to use simple present tense especially the form of negative sentences and interrogative sentences, because most of students still find the difficulties in changing the sentences into negative and interrogative. (b). The teacher should teach and give a lot of exercises to the students about how to differentiate the use of regular verb and irregular verbs order to motivate them in learning vocabulary , because some students still made mistake when they complete the sentences in using irregular verbs and regular verbs. (c). Further, for the students who had below average ability, the writer suggests the teachers to pay more attention to them in comprehending the simple present tense in particular and learning English in general. (2). For the Students: (a). The students should do more exercise and learn about the regular verbs and iregular verbs, auxiliary verbs or helping verb especially in constructing the sentences which in affirmative, negative and interrogative sentences in simple present tense. (b). The students should also differentiate the use of regular verbs and iregular verbs. They should master grammar and vocabulary that can help them in constructing the sentences.
