Abstract

Pollution of dyes in waters can cause problems for the environment that can endanger the health of living things. One of the dyes found in wastewater is methylene blue. Methylene blue is a dye that is widely used in various industrial fields, especially the textile industry, but has a negative impact on the environment. With this problem, it is necessary to make efforts to overcome the problem of industrial waste. One method that can be used to overcome the dangers of dye waste is the adsorption method. Adsorption is a process of absorption by certain solids against certain substances that occur on the surface of solids due to the attraction of atoms or molecules. Solids that are used as absorbents are generally obtained from agricultural waste called biosorbents. The biosorbent used in this study was palm fruit coir (Borassus flabellifer Linn). Palm fiber coir is used as a biosorbent because it is easy to obtain. This study aims to determine the adsorption capacity of palm fiber biosorbent to methylene blue dye with variations in surface area, pH, mass, contact time and concentration of methylene blue. The results showed that the optimum surface area of lontar coir was 80 mesh with an adsorption capacity of 11.66 mg/g, optimum pH 6 with an adsorption capacity of 12.97%, an optimum mass of biosorbent of lontar fruit coir 0.1 gram with an adsorption capacity of 12.52%, optimum contact time was 50 minutes with adsorption capacity of 6.43%, optimum concentration of methylene blue was 90 ppm with adsorption capacity of 47.04%. The results of FTIR characterization showed that the active groups in cellulose before adsorption were reflected in the spectra showing the presence of O-H vibrations at 3232,7 cm-1 , C-O vibrations were seen at 1033,85 cm-1 , at a wavelength of 1593,2 cm-1 and 1504,48 cm-1 there are vibrations from the C=C bond, while the C-H vibrations appear at wavelengths 3194,13 cm-1 , 3169,04 cm-1 and 3128,54 cm-1 . The results of FTIR characterization showed that the active groups in cellulose after adsorption were reflected in the spectra showing O-H vibrations shifting at a wavelength of 2565,33 cm-1 , C-O vibrations were found at three wavelength peaks, namely 1004,91 cm-1 , 1033,85 cm-1 and 1045,42 cm-1 , the C=C vibration is found at a wavelength of 1591,27 cm-1 , while the C-H vibration is shifted and appears at a wavelength of 2933,73 cm-1 , 2897,08 cm-1 and 2872,01 cm-1 .
