Abstract

This study is entitled “A Study on the Translation From Bahasa Indonesia into English by the Tenth Grade Students of SMA.Seminari St.Rafael Kupang in the School Year 2017/2018”. It was conducted to answer the following questions. (1) Is the translation of narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of the tenth grade students of SMA Seminari St. Rafael Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 good or bad? (2) What are the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Seminari St. Rafael Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in translating narrative text from Indonesian language into English? The objectives of the study are the following (1) To find out whether the translation of narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia into English by the tenth grade students of SMA Seminari St. Rafael Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 good or bad. (2) To find out the difficulties faced by the tenth grade students of SMA Seminari St. Rafael Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 in translating narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia into English. The writer used descriptive method to describe students translation. The subject of this study was the tenth grade students of SMA Seminari St. Rafael Kupang. But for this study, the writer chose class X of language program. There were 10 students in the class. The instrument was an Indonesian text about “Cinderella”. The test consist of 290 sentences which consists of 29 sentences since there were 10 students, there were 290 translated sentences (29 sentences x 10 students). From the result of analysis, there were 241 (83.10%) sentences are Good and 49 (16.89%) sentences are Bad. The result of the study shows that: (1) The translation of narrative text from Bahasa Indonesia into English by the tenth grade students of SMA Seminnari St. Rafael Kupang in the school year 2017/2018 is classified as GOOD. (2) The areas of difficulties faced by the students were lack of grammatical structure such as wrong word order, incomplete sentence, and lack of vocabulary. The wrong uses of these grammatical aspects distorted a few original meaning of the content. Hence, the writer provides some suggestion as the following: (1) The English teacher at the research school needs to pay attention to the grammatical aspects and the word choice and the correct word order in the sentences. (2) The students need to practice more than their grammatical aspects and the word choice. Students need to learn more the English grammar and need to enrich their vocabulary.
